Theatre Review - Neverwhere

We went to see an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere at the Rorscharch Theatre in Washington D.C.  It was fabulous.  The set design was fantastic. The audience was seated inside the set and the actors ran around the chairs and up and down scaffolding, mimicking the feel of a crowded subterranean labyrinth. The actors did a great job and the story came to life beautifully.

Watching Neverwhere made me think of stories, old and new. The book is a miss-mash of Alice in Wonderland and Hero's Journey. A Washington Post critic noted that the female character, Door, is very much like Princess Leia. He's right. I hadn't noticed it before, but the plot is very similar to Star Wars.

Writers tell the same stories over and over again. The stories are eternal. It's what's inside us that makes each retelling new.
