Miss Willoughby and the Haunted Bookshop Review

Well, I have no idea what this movie was supposed to be. A Hallmark Mysteries pilot? A Netflix original? Whatever the original intent it's not a bit of an orphan, available as a DVD or streaming on Amazon/Youtube/GooglePlay but with no sequel announced.

But it's a delight of a movie with luscious scenery and amazing wardrobe choices (except for some unfortunate peach eyeshadow). Think Midsummer Murders with a bigger budget and American accents. Check out the trailer below:

The plot is unlikely, to say the least. Miss Willoughby is a bookish Lara Croft, with a manor house, a faithful sidekick (her ex-military guardian played by Kelsey Grammer), and a professor gig at a nearby university. She's good at puzzles, hand-to-hand combat and tweeds.

It's fantastical but in a good way, and the movie hits all the cozy mystery tropes--haunted bookshop, suspicious book club members, suspects interrogated over a nice cup of tea, handsome policeman, etc... Sadly, there is no romance storyline, which I feel is a big miss (the hot cop was a huge missed opportunity imo). There's also no red herrings, and the mystery is barely a mystery at all. Heck, there isn't even a body until the movie is almost over.

But the movie is a relaxing, charming treat and I've already watched it several times (with a nice cup fo tea, of course!). There doesn't seem to be a sequel in the works which is a pity as the movie is well worth the $4.99 price or library wait list (it's not on Hoopla yet, but I hope it will be soon). Keep an eye out for this one.
